England coach Roy Hodgson dismissed criticism of their style of play during the Euros.

Hodgson confirmed he will name an experimental line-up in August’s friendly against Italy but rejected the idea England have to radically alter their style.

“I don’t regard statistics, and especially possession statistics, as particularly important when saying which is a good team and which is a bad team,” he said. “But if you are saying to me we could have kept the ball better at times and could have made more use of the good situations we got into, I’d have to agree with that.

“I think all the players realise that too. That’s an area where we have to keep working and keep improving but I don’t think statistics alone play a big part.

“We have enough quality in our players to match any style we want, but in this tournament we didn’t have a lot of time to prepare and although we defended well throughout, we could have attacked better.”

Germany can’t understand England’s failures at penalty shootouts.

Chelsea fullback Ashley Cole and Manchester United winger Ashley Young both missed in the defeat to Italy.

Germany goalkeeping coach Andrea Kopke was his country’s hero against England at Euro96, saving Gareth Southgate’s weak sudden-death strike.

Kopke was at a loss today as to why England were still so bad at penalties.

He said: “It was all in their own hands. They were up one penalty and hitting the crossbar was just unlucky.

“Cole had a stinker when he took that penalty. England are tragically unlucky in many respects but why that is, I don’t know.”

Beard defended the club’s punishment, and is hopeful the player will be able to put the incident behind him as they prepare for a second season back in the Premier League.

He said: “It was important that we took our time to make sure we came to the correct decision, which I believe we have achieved.

“Joey’s behaviour, which led to his red card at Manchester City, and his subsequent actions were completely unacceptable and we have made our feelings on this matter known to him.

“I am really pleased with the way the club and Joey have worked towards reaching a conclusion and we fully believe he will respond to these sanctions in the correct manner.”

Rudge sees Wilson breaking back into Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland squad.

“Trapattoni stayed with those players who got them into the Euros,” Rudge told The Sentinel, “but I would think Marc’s chances would now open up when it comes to preparing for the next World Cup.

“They are going to have to re-assess their players, regarding the age of some of them, and they haven’t got a massive amount to choose from in the Premier League.

“He’s disappointed he’s been overlooked and I bet Marc would have loved to have been out there when he was watching Ireland not having the best of tournaments.”

“I am not sure what will end up being his best position because he is so adaptable.

“But up to now is he has been a good signing for us,” he told The Sentinel.

He told Villa’s website: “I’m 100 per cent now.

“I’ve probably been 100 per cent for a little while, but it’s just about ironing out the final rusty bits of my game really – trying to sprint full pace and kicking with my left foot.

“It’s all healed now and all ready to go.

“It’s my first proper injury I’ve had in my career so, touch wood, I just want to have a solid injury free season and be right up there with the goals again.”
